Diving for Beginners in Egypt
A beginner diving guide for Egypt: try dives vs courses, what a PADI course involves, where to learn, what to expect underwater, and safety basics.

Egypt's Red Sea is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive: warm, clear, calm water and reefs that start in the shallows. If you've only ever snorkeled, this is where many travelers take the plunge for the first time. Reviewed June 2026.
Can beginners dive in Egypt?
Yes — the Red Sea is famously beginner-friendly. Gentle conditions, excellent visibility, and reefs close to shore make it ideal for first dives and entry-level courses. You don't need any experience to start with a supervised introductory dive.
Try dive vs diving course — which is right for you?
There are two main ways to begin:
- A "try" / discovery dive — a single supervised dive with an instructor, no certification, perfect for testing whether you enjoy it.
- A beginner course (e.g. PADI Open Water) — a multi-day course that certifies you to dive independently within limits. Consider the Sharm El Sheikh PADI Open Water Diver Course.
If you think you'll dive again, the course is better value; for a one-off taste, a try dive is enough.
What does a beginner diving course involve?
A typical entry-level course mixes theory, confined-water skills (often in a pool or shallow bay), and open-water dives on the reef over a few days. You learn buoyancy, breathing, and safety skills with an instructor before diving the reefs properly.
